Hey Sarasota friends!
It’s Mario Leyva from The Lawn Goat LLC, and I’m back with something that’s gonna make your yard sing this season — your Spring Lawn Care Checklist. I know you’re probably enjoying the warm breeze, longer days, and the sweet smell of blooming flowers, but don’t forget — your lawn is waking up too, and it’s hungry for some TLC.
Here’s what you need to know to get your grass back in shape and ready to thrive in this Florida heat.
✅ Step 1: Rake Away the Old Stuff
Before you do anything fancy, give your lawn a good old-fashioned raking. All those leaves, sticks, and leftover thatch from winter? Gotta go. Your grass needs space to breathe and sunlight to hit the soil. A quick cleanup clears the way for new growth and prevents mold and pests from sticking around.
✅ Step 2: Check Your Soil
We’re not talking science class here — just a basic check to make sure your soil isn’t too compacted. Over the winter, especially with foot traffic or heavy rain, the soil can get packed down tight.
Solution? Aeration.
You can rent an aerator, but honestly — if you don’t feel like hauling machinery around, call my team and we’ll handle it. Aerating helps water, air, and nutrients reach the roots so your grass grows strong.
✅ Step 3: Wake Up That Lawn with the Right Fertilizer
Timing is everything. You don’t want to fertilize too early, or too heavy, especially in Florida where a heatwave can come outta nowhere.
Use a slow-release nitrogen fertilizer in late March or early April. It'll feed the lawn gradually as the temps rise. And always, always water it in properly. If you’re not sure which blend to use for your grass type, give us a shout and we’ll point you in the right direction.
✅ Step 4: Pre-Emergent Weed Control
Spring is the time to stop weeds before they start. We’re talking crabgrass, dandelions, and other uninvited guests. Use a pre-emergent herbicide in early spring — around when daytime temps are consistently hitting 65–70°F.
Already got some weeds poppin' up? No stress — a post-emergent spray can knock them out.
✅ Step 5: Water Wisely
Don’t go wild with the sprinkler just because it’s spring. Your grass only needs about 1 inch of water per week, including rain. Water early in the morning — like 5 to 9 AM — so it soaks in and doesn’t evaporate in the heat.
Watering at night? That’s a no-no. You’ll just invite disease and fungus to the party.
✅ Step 6: Mow with a Plan
You knew this was coming, right?
As I always say — don’t scalp your lawn. Stick to the right height for your grass type:
St. Augustine: 3–4 inches
Zoysia: 2–2.5 inches
Bahia: 3–4 inches
Bermuda: 1–1.5 inches
And remember my golden rule — never cut more than 1/3 of the blade in a single mow. Keep those mower blades sharp and switch up your mowing pattern every week.
If all that sounds like too much, guess what?
We can handle it for you. 😎
✅ Step 7: Don’t Forget the Edges
This one gets overlooked, but it makes a huge difference. Clean, crisp edges along driveways, walkways, and flower beds give your lawn that pro-level finish. And yes — we do edging too.
